Summary
Driving and parking
- 80% of parents/carers drive to school at least some of the time
- During the School Street they tend to park in the orange zone on Pembroke Road and part of Penny Street, although a third park in a variety of places depending on availability of spaces
Behaviour change
- Nearly half of those who drive to school have made changes to the way they travel
- Just over half of those who have made a change say that they park further away and walk the remaining distance to school
- A fifth have changed the mode of transport they use with most now cycling and/or scooting wherever possible
Benefits and disadvantages
- The main benefit is improved safety. Other benefits are it being a nicer place to be, more people walking, easier to cross the road, and more space to walk, wheel, cycle or scoot in the School Street area
- For residents there is the additional benefit of it being easier to leave and return to their property (i.e. accessing their driveways and/or finding parking spaces)
- The disadvantages centre on non-permitted vehicles entering the zone and some parents arriving early to avoid restrictions
Support and suggested changes
- Just over three-quarters of respondents support the School Street. However, 45% would like to see some changes to its current form
- The main issue is lack of enforcement or monitoring as a small minority of parents/carers are still ignoring the restrictions
