Support: loss of home due to family/friends

• In the case of being asked to leave by friends/ family, residents are most likely to advise those at risk of losing their home to seek support from the Council’s website (48%). 35% would suggest an online search and 31% a local charity, such as Advice Portsmouth or the HIVE
• Residents are least confident in advising on this scenario – a quarter report that they do not know where they would direct someone being asked to leave by family/ friends

48% of respondents said they would advise someone at risk of losing their home because they were being asked to leave by friends or family to go to the Council’s website for support. 35% said they would advise an online search. 31% said they would advise going to a local charity. 19% said they would advise going to friends or family. 13% said they would advise going to a national charity. 2% said they would advise going to Portsmouth City Council directly. 3% said they would advise going somewhere else. 25% said they did not know where to advise.

Sex

Males are least confident advising where to go in this scenario; a third report they wouldn’t know.

Females are more likely to direct someone to a local charity (+15%) or the Council’s website (+11%).

Ethnic group

Residents from White ethnic groups are more likely to suggest an online search (+8%), whilst those from ethnic minority groups are more likely to suggest going to the Council’s website (+7%), friends or family (+9%), or a national charity (12%+). However, residents from ethnic minority groups are more likely to not know where to go (+11%).

Disability

Those without a disability are more likely to suggest going to the Council’s website (+7%) or doing an online search (+11%), whilst those with a disability are more likely to suggest a local charity (+5%) or report that they don’t know where to go (+8%).

Age

Younger residents (<35 years) are more likely to suggest an online search (45%). Those under 25 are also more likely to suggest friends or family (37%) or a local charity (37%).

In contrast, those aged 45 and over are more likely to suggest seeking support from a national charity (15%-19%).

Household income

Those with higher household incomes (£40k+) are more likely to suggest online search (39%-49%), and those with an income of £40k-£59k, specifically, are more likely to suggest going to friends or family (31%).

Those on the lowest household incomes (<£20k), on the other hand, are more likely to suggest seeking support from a local charity (40%).

Housing status

Local authority renters are more likely to advise seeking support from the Council (17%) and its website (57%), as well as from local charities (50%) or family/friends in this scenario (44%).

Private renters are more likely to suggest an online search (47%)
