Support: loss of home due to domestic abuse

• Residents are most likely to direct those at risk of losing their home due to domestic abuse to local charities (40%), most commonly those offering support for domestic abuse like Stop Domestic Abuse and Portsmouth Abuse and Rape Counselling Service
• The same proportion would advise looking at the Council’s website (40%), whilst a third would suggest seeking support from friends or family and 30% an online search

40% of respondents said they would advise someone at risk of losing their home due to domestic abuse to go to a local charity for support. 40% said they would advise going to the Council’s website. 33% said they would advise going to friends or family. 30% said they would advise an online search. 13% said they would advise going to a national charity. 13% said they would advise going to the police. 1% said they would advise going to Portsmouth City Council directly. 3% said they would advise going somewhere else. 15% said they did not know where to advise.

Sex

Females are far more likely to advise seeking support from a local charity (+18%), and more likely to suggest an online search (+9%) or support from friends or family (+7%).

Males are slightly more likely to suggest the police (+3%) or not know where to advise (+8%).

Ethnic group

Residents from ethnic minority groups are much more likely to advise seeking support from the Council’s website (+30%) whilst those from White ethnic groups are more likely to suggest a local charity (+8%) or friends or family (+7%).

Disability

Those with a disability are more likely to suggest seeking support from a local (+13%) or national (+6%) charity, whilst those without a more likely to suggest an online search (+17%).

Age

Older residents (65+ years) are less likely to advising seeking support from a local charity (27%) but are more likely to suggest a national charity (18%).

Those under 45 are more likely to suggest an online search (32%-43%) and those under 25 are most likely to advise seeking support from friends or family (25%).

Household income

Those with higher household incomes (£40k+) are more likely to suggest a local charity (43%-45%) or an online search (32%-39%), whilst those earning £20k-£39k are more likely to suggest the Council’s website (55%).

Those with the highest household income (£60k) are less likely to advice support from friends and family (26%).

Housing status

Local authority renters are more likely to advise seeking support from the Council’s website (68%), a local charity (55%), or from the police (27%).

Private renters are more likely to suggest seeking support from family or friends (45%).
