To what extent would the following short-term options (i.e. things that can be delivered in a shorter timescale) about your experience on board make you personally use bus services in Portsmouth more?

  • Ensuring buses are safe and having friendly and helpful staff would have the biggest impact on bus usage in Portsmouth in terms of improving the on board experience; 47% and 46% respectively report the greatest impact for these improvements
  • CCTV on all buses would increase bus usage ‘to a great extent’ for 40% of respondents, however ‘every bus having USB chargers’ would not have a big impact on bus usage; only 18% report it would increase their bus usage ‘to a great extent’ and over a fifth report it would have no impact on their bus use

This chart shows that all changes will have a greater impact on females except for ‘every bus having USB chargers’ where their responses match those from males. ‘Ensuring buses are safe’ would increase bus usage amongst a majority of females ‘to a great extent’ (53%) compared to 35% of males. Similarly, the chart also indicates that ‘friendly and helpful staff (who are disability aware)’ would have the greatest impact on half of females compared to 36% of males.

This chart shows that all suggested improvements appeal more to respondents with a disability, the biggest difference however is ‘friendly and helpful staff (who are disability aware)’; almost two-thirds of respondents with a disability (64%) would increase their bus usage ‘to a great extent’ if this provision was improved, compared to 43% of those with no disability. ‘Every bus having USB’ chargers’ would also have a greater impact on respondents with a disability (+12 percentage points) however it is still the on-board experience change with the least appeal. The remaining two options appealed more to respondents with a disability but to a lesser extent; ‘ensuring buses are safe’ (+5 percentage points) and ‘CCTV on all buses’ (+7 percentage points).
