Cycling in Portsmouth: Barriers to cycling

• The largest proportion of respondents feel that safety issues prevent them from cycling more frequently (66%).
• A majority of respondents also report issues with unconnected cycle paths (58%), difficult junctions (56%) and a lack of secure cycle parking (54%).
• For the vast majority of respondents the costs of purchasing and maintaining a bicycle does not prevent them from cycling more frequently (95%).

The following chart shows the issues that either prevent or do not prevent respondents from cycling more frequently. Safety issues are the most common barriers to cycling (66%) whilst the costs of purchasing and maintaining a bicycle is the least common barrier (5%).
