Feedback from in person engagement events

Drop-in / pop-up engagement events took place at the following locations:

  • North End Library
  • Old Portsmouth, Square Tower
  • Mountbatten Centre
  • Cosham Library
  • Palmerston Road
  • College Park
  • Commercial Road
  • Gibson Centre (Somerstown Spooktacular)
  • Baffins Alderman Lacey Library
  • University of Portsmouth Library

Comments were in line with those received via the online survey. The main themes and comments are outlined below

Better public transport
  • Need bus routes serving North End to Burrfields Road, Farlington, and Fareham
  • Welcome the £2 fare and other improvements such as earlier / later buses and free Sundays
  • Electric monorail into the city
  • Buses unreliable or have badly planned timetables
  • Pay more council tax to get free buses
  • Free shopping buses like the Asda ones
  • New Park & Ride on eastern side of city

Residential parking
  • Reduce number of commercial vehicles which are blocking residential spaces. Van owners sometimes using roads and footpaths to conduct their commercial business. Commercial vehicles look unattractive and are dangerous to cyclists and pedestrians. Could hubs be created (the same for camper vans). May require different rules for sole traders vs. fleet vehicles
  • Could wider roads be marked with diagonal parking bays to increase capacity. Also made one-way
  • Could parking be provided on football match days either at Park & Ride or at underused commercial car parks
  • Residents near the seafront have nowhere to park during the summer because of tourists
  • Could drop-off and pick-up zones be introduced e.g. Lake Road
  • Disabled spaces and EV spaces need to be reviewed, both to assess appropriate quantity and to enforce correct usage
  • RPZs are unfair and cause displacement. No guarantee of a space. Consider flexible zones for multiple areas
  • Make it easier for forecourts to be converted for parking
  • Use schools or other locations for residents parking
  • HMOs worsen problem of insufficient parking

Sustainable travel/ car reduction
  • E-scooters are dangerous
  • Council tax discount for those without a vehicle
  • Two car limit per household
  • Cycle routes too disjointed
  • Secure bike parking / more hangars needed
  • More school streets
  • Some people will always need to use their cars

Other
  • Insufficient enforcement of parking regulations
  • Nowhere to park in city centre
  • Free 30 mins parking
  • Parking should be free in the city centre and at hospitals
  • Ensure options for parking payment. Not just apps
